Royal Mail to create delivery point positional data database.By
This is news, indeed. If the project is carried out, Royal Mail will assign a geo-position data point to every Royal Mail delivery point in the UK and Northern Ireland. That is to say that there will be about 28.2 million addresses combined with geographical co-ordinates. Not a cheap exercise, and no doubt intended to be the basis of a marketable product. RM is asking letter carriers to volunteer for temporary assignment to the project.
The current offering of addresses and positional data is the National Address Gazetteer Database which is made available through the Ordnance Survey. The license for this is so expensive (about 130,000 GBP +VAT per year) companies have complained to the government.
A little competition from the formerly monopoly Post might be a good thing.
