Royal Mail ‘should make postcode address data available for free’

If it costs GBP 24 million a year to maintain and administer this, then RM needs to be compensated. That’s simply fair to the rate payers. But that sounds like an awful lot. The USPS does it for a bit over USD10 million a year, or less than 1/3rd the price.  Perhaps RM should outsource the job.

  1. Gary Delaney says:

Let me guess – the people pushing for this want it for free from the people who pay to create and maintian it and then want to allow others have it for free from them – only to make fortunes from selling applications built around it – he\ard this argument from the open data people before – its not s ustainable argument. Can be done if the condition is that anyone makes money from any product contianing it should pay 50% to Royal Mail – that would be fair and only way this could work!
