PMG Donohoe’s Farewell Speech to National Press ClubBy
40 years at the USPS, 6 of them as PMG and in charge of down-sizing the largest “company” in the United States, which was done effectively and efficiently without any curtailment of service, and in fact while developing new services, like same day parcel delivery and Every Door Direct Mail. Not to mention reducing headcount by over 200,000, closing hundreds of surplus mail processing centers, and fighting off a requirement to fund 40 years of medical benefits over a required 10 year period.
PMG Donohoe has a pretty good record, and his valedictory lays out a pretty-well known litany of “what needs doing if Congress will only come to its senses”. And which many of us in this industry have despaired of ever seeing accomplished.
This is not to deny that the constituencies most invested in the USPS have valid concerns, especially the work force and the customers. But, the changes still remaining will require sacrifices and turmoil that will put great stress on the new leadership. We look forward to seeing how ingenious, and tough, is the new PMG, Megan Brennan.
